Akka Anna Mentorship Program
30+ students mentored through our Akka Anna Program.
The Akka Anna Mentorship Program is a Tamil twist on America's Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. We aim to make the big educational transitions of life, elementary to middle school, middle school to high school, and high school to college more seamless through a network of Tamil students that have already been in the same place as the mentees.
Connects high school and college students with middle schoolers to guide them in:
Academic support (course selection, study habits)
High School preparation (applications, scholarships)
Forming a long-lasting Tamil community
Namma Kalakkal Culture
Kolam - Discover the intricate art of geometric Kolam making with colored chalks through hands-on practice.
Cooking - Campers will learn how to cook traditional Tamil recipes with the help of an experienced adult while exploring the spices and stories behind them.
Tamil Games - Play traditional Tamil games like pallanguzhi and kabaddi that have brought Tamil communities together for years.
Family Tree creation - Trace your roots and familial ties by building a Tamil family tree while discussing family history through oral storytelling.
Learning to drape Indian clothing - Campers will learn how to drape saris and veshtis through hands-on learning with guidance and assistance.
Tamil History and Migration - Students will explore the journeys and diasporas of Tamil people across continents and the history behind them.
Tamil Architecture - Campers will uncover the history and stories behind Tamil temples, sculptures, and urban planning, modern and ancient.
Indian political system - tamilnadu politics - Understand how Tamil Nadu politics and government is unique and the role it plays at a larger level, past and present.
Tamilnadu state study - Students will experience the history and culture behind different parts of Tamil Nadu and its geography.
Archeology - Students will study the intricacies of Tamil inscriptions and their influence on society and understanding of history today.
Pen Pal (with students in Tamil Nadu) - Students will connect with Tamil students from Tamil Nadu and discuss common threads in their lives as well as cultural differences and similarities.
